Kokoro Nikki vs Day One
Two private journaling apps with different priorities. Where each one is the better choice, with sources.
Day One is a long-established, full-featured journal for iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Apple Watch and the web, with end-to-end encrypted sync. Kokoro Nikki is a smaller mobile app for iOS and Android that keeps the journal on the phone, has no streaks and no account system, and is built around emotional reflection and Japanese aesthetics. Neither is better in general: they are built for different people.

Choose Day One if…
You write on more than one device, including a computer, and want the same journal everywhere. You attach photos and audio to your entries and keep several journals. Or you want your journal backed up in the cloud with end-to-end encryption, rather than kept on a single phone.
Choose Kokoro Nikki if…
You want nothing counting your consistency: no streaks and no missed-day counters. You would rather have no account at all, and prefer that your journal lives only on your phone. You dictate long entries, on Android as well as iPhone.
Or you want a journal shaped around reflection rather than capture: an emotional reading of each entry, a sumi-e watercolor every fourteen days once there are at least 7 entries, seasonal themes, and a haiku mode.
The privacy difference, precisely
The two apps protect your journal in different ways, and it is worth being exact. Day One keeps your journal in its sync service when you use an account, and encrypts new journals end to end by default. Kokoro Nikki has no sync service: the journal is stored only on the phone, behind the phone’s own device encryption, and the app adds no encryption layer of its own.
The trade-off is real. If you lose your phone without an export, a Kokoro Nikki journal cannot be recovered from us, because we never had it. Both apps use OpenAI for their AI features, and in both those features are optional.
Streaks and motivation
Day One shows a streak: the number of consecutive days with entries. Some people find that motivating. Kokoro Nikki leaves it out on purpose, so that a week without writing costs nothing and there is never a count to keep alive. If a visible count helps you write, Day One has one. If it turns journaling into an obligation, Kokoro Nikki does not.
Moving between them
Kokoro Nikki does not import entries from other apps, so moving from Day One means starting a new journal here. In the other direction, Kokoro Nikki exports the whole journal as one Markdown file with a JSON block, with or without a subscription.

Is Kokoro Nikki a good Day One alternative?
Yes, if you journal on your phone and want no streaks, no account and a journal kept only on the device. If you need a desktop app or sync across devices, Kokoro Nikki does not offer them and Day One does.
Can I import my Day One journal into Kokoro Nikki?
No. Kokoro Nikki does not import entries from other apps.
Does Day One require an account?
Only for sync: Day One’s own guide says an account is required to use Day One Sync. Kokoro Nikki has no account system at all.
Does Kokoro Nikki sync between devices?
No. There is no cloud sync, and entries are stored only on the phone. Export your journal before changing phone.
