A shadow work journal built for depth
Private. Offline. Unflinching.
Shadow work — the practice of examining the parts of yourself you tend to suppress, project, or avoid — requires the most private possible writing space. Kokoro Nikki is built around a privacy-first architecture that makes deep journaling feel genuinely safe.
What shadow work journaling actually is
The concept comes from Carl Jung's idea that the psyche contains a 'shadow' — aspects of ourselves we've buried because they were judged, shamed, or inconvenient. Shadow work journaling means writing toward those aspects: the anger you don't let yourself feel, the desires you dismiss as unacceptable, the patterns you repeat without understanding why. It's uncomfortable and it's valuable.
Privacy architecture
Voice transcription is 100% on-device — no audio ever leaves your phone. Journal entries are stored locally and encrypted. Cloud sync uses end-to-end encryption. AI analysis transmits only your entry text, not any personal identifiers, and OpenAI has committed to not using API inputs for model training. You can disable AI analysis entirely.
No judgment in the UI
Kokoro Nikki has no social features, no sharing, no public profiles, no streaks that punish inconsistency, and no positive-reinforcement mechanics that reward 'good' entries. The app is designed to get out of the way of whatever you need to write — including the things you've never said out loud.
Emotional pattern recognition over time
One of the core tools of shadow work is noticing repetition: the same conflict appearing in different forms, the same emotional response triggered by different situations. The Kintsugi Timeline and AI analysis can surface these patterns across months of writing — not to interpret them, but to make them visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this app designed specifically for shadow work?
It's a general journaling app with privacy and depth as core values — which makes it well-suited for shadow work. There's no specific shadow work mode or prompts.
Will anyone be able to read my entries?
No. Entries are encrypted and private. There are no social features, no sharing, and no way for other users or the developer to read your journal.
Can I use the app without AI analysis?
Yes. AI analysis can be disabled in Settings. The rest of the app — entries, voice, timeline, themes — works normally.
