Seasonal Themes

A journaling space that breathes with the year

In Japanese culture, the seasons are not just weather — they are emotional registers, each carrying its own aesthetic vocabulary. Hanami (flower viewing), natsu matsuri (summer festivals), momijigari (autumn leaf hunting), and kotatsu (winter warmth) each evoke a different quality of presence. Kokoro Nikki's seasonal themes bring this awareness into your journaling practice.

Four seasons, four moods

The app's theme automatically shifts with the real-world calendar. Spring brings soft pinks and sakura motifs — a sense of beginning and fragility. Summer moves into warmer hues, evoking festivals and cicada-loud evenings. Autumn deepens into amber and rust, the beauty of things ending. Winter settles into deep blue and lantern light — stillness, reflection, warmth from within.

Rooted in kisetsukan

The Japanese concept of kisetsukan (季節感) — seasonal feeling or sensitivity — is the philosophical root of this feature. It's the practice of noticing where you are in the year and letting that awareness color your attention. The themes are designed to evoke this quality without imposing it.

Micro-seasons

The traditional Japanese calendar divides the year into 72 micro-seasons (shichijūniko), each lasting about five days. Kokoro Nikki draws from this tradition for subtle variations within each season — the difference between early spring (when plum blossoms appear) and late spring (cherry blossom peak and dispersal).

Manual override

If you prefer a fixed theme, you can lock any season from Settings. Southern hemisphere users can also flip the calendar so seasons match their local experience.
