Inner Landscape — your emotions, painted in ink
心象 · A sumi-e watercolor for every season of your inner life
Most apps reduce your emotional life to charts and percentages. Kokoro Nikki does something different: it composes a unique sumi-e watercolor — a Japanese ink painting — derived from what you've actually written. Every 14 days, when you have enough entries, the app generates a one-of-a-kind landscape that captures your recent emotional weather. It's not a chart. It's not analytics. It's personal art that exists only for you.
How a landscape is composed
The app reads your last entries and identifies the dominant emotions, secondary emotions, and overall valence. Those signals are mapped to ink techniques and palettes — gratitude becomes soft pink ink wash and sakura blossoms; grief becomes deep ink with sparse strokes. The current Japanese micro-season (二十四節気 — one of 24 across the year) sets the seasonal vocabulary. The result is generated in 15-30 seconds and watermarked with the Kokoro Nikki seal.
The 24 micro-seasons of Japan
Japanese culture recognizes 24 sekki — micro-seasons that subdivide the year into two-week emotional and natural rhythms. Late April is Grain Rain (穀雨); early summer is the time of Lesser Heat (小暑); deep autumn brings Frost Descent (霜降). Each Inner Landscape is anchored to the sekki active when it was generated, so over a year your gallery becomes a record of your emotional life set against Japan's deepest seasonal vocabulary.
The reveal — a small ceremony
When a new landscape is ready, the app doesn't just show it. The card appears face-down with a glowing seal: 'Contemplate the painting.' Tap it, the card shakes with a quiet haptic pulse, and then flips — a 1.2 second animation that reveals the painting underneath, along with the emotional composition that produced it. The reveal was designed to feel like opening a sealed letter, not unlocking an achievement.
Saved forever in your gallery
Every Inner Landscape is permanent. The image lives in your personal gallery (My Landscapes), accessible to premium and trial users. Tap any landscape to see its composition breakdown — which emotions shaped it, which sekki was active, which entries it grew from. You can also export a 9:16 version for sharing, with editable poetic phrases inspired by the painting.
When the next one will appear
Inner Landscapes are gated by two thresholds: at least 7 new diary entries since the last landscape, and at least 14 days. Both must be true. This pacing was chosen deliberately — daily generation would dilute the weight of each painting, and rare entries shouldn't trigger one. The 14-day cadence also aligns naturally with the sekki rhythm.
Built on real privacy
The text content of your recent entries is sent to the AI image generator securely; no personal identifiers, no email, no name. The generated image is uploaded to private storage with signed URLs that only your account can access. You own the painting in every meaningful sense: it exists for you, it's stored against your account, and you can delete it whenever you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Inner Landscape included in the free trial?
Yes. Premium and trial users can generate Inner Landscapes once the entry and time thresholds are met. After the trial ends, premium subscription is required for new generations, but landscapes you already generated stay in your gallery.
Can I trigger a landscape manually?
No — the gates (7 entries, 14 days) are intentional. The waiting is part of the experience. If we let you trigger one any time, the paintings would lose the weight of representing a real emotional period.
What if I don't like the painting that was generated?
Each landscape is unique and tied to your emotional state at that time. We don't offer regeneration — that would turn it into a slot machine. But you can hide a specific landscape from your gallery if you'd rather not keep it.
Can I share my Inner Landscape on social media?
Yes. Each landscape has a Share button that exports a 9:16 version optimized for Instagram Stories and similar formats, with a poetic phrase you can edit before sharing.
